This 40-year-old elephant named Sambo had been working for the Angkor Elephant Company.

Recently, she collapsed and died on the side of the road after making just two trips carrying tourists to a famous temple. According to the veterinarian who examined her, she died of a heart attack as a result of the combination of high temperatures and lack of wind to keep her cool. It was 104ºF outside that day.

Many visitors who saw the fallen elephant on the road side began to cry. Angkor Elephant Company still has 13 elephants working in captivity, which is currently the largest concentration of captive elephants in the country.

A petition has been started, calling for the end of elephant riding to the famous temples, and it already has over 10,000 signatures.

Sambo did not deserve to die this way. These elephants need safer working conditions, or even better, this practice needs to be ended completely!
