Electronics can be a beautiful thing in their own way. But when they’re  repurposed at the hands of an master crafter, circuit boards and old wires  can become something truly  special.

Julie Chappell is one of those crafters– she’s an artist in the United Kingdom who  specializes in creating elegant winged insects out of recycled electronics parts. “My art practice involves breaking down the pre-existing materials, reinterpreting them and offering them a new form with new purpose, creating something beautiful, whimsical and precious,” she said.

Chappell was working on a Fine Arts degree when she began to develop an interest in environmental art. She met other artists at a workshop who were making robots made out of circuit boards from computers.

Chappel was struck by the beauty of the circuitry and decided to take some home. Later on, she remembered how parts of the circuitry looked like little ants inside a box when she was younger. Then,  while she was watching a nature show about biodiversity, the idea came to fruition and  she  decided to make her first electronic insect.

She named her series Computer Component Bugs and her goal is to raise awareness about environmental waste.
