When Phyllis Shaughnessy found out that school districts in Grays Harbor County in Washington were not offering free or reduced lunches during the summer, she started fundraising to help get food and deliver sacked lunches to families who need them.

Her Green Lantern Lunches program targets low-income children and makes sure they get lunches during the summer. The bagged lunches mostly include non-perishable foods like canned fruits, veggies, crackers and ramen noodles. After they are packed, Phyllis and a few other volunteers hand deliver the food to the kids’ homes and it’s something the families look forward to.

All in all, Phyllis’ volunteer efforts helps feed 200 kids a day. It’s all in a day’s work for Phyllis.

“It’s my job,” she says. “We’re all put on the earth to do something. Better to give than to take.”
